pre:fab School

pre:fab School is an alternative route to education and licensing in architecture and the built environment delivered through hands-on community building projects and five key subject areas—our pillars of learning—delivered with a local focus: history, theory of practice, community organising, mātauranga māori, and materials

pre:fab School emphasises:

Architecture as gathering: At the core of pre:fab School is our belief that building the built environment has always been about gathering and that our conscious design of, and participation in this gathering is foundational to our ability to create spaces that support our goals and aspirations.

Learning through doing: The delivery of pre:fab school will be informed by a history of educational models that center students as active contributors to the output of the school, and structured around community building projects—our pillars of learning embodied through the act of organising and effecting change in the built environment.

Research and Licensing: Alongside workshops and hands-on building and organising, pre:fab School offers two parallel mentorship programs, the first to obtain LBP licensure, and the second to support a self-directed research project across history; theory of practice; teaching and learning; communication; and organising for the purpose personal, professional and disciplinary development.

In 2026, pre:fab School will run as an 8 week part-time pilot, a space for all involved to collectively test, develop, discuss and refine this vision, building to the launch of what we imagine as an annually recurring 12-16 week x 3 year vertically integrated school, with associated mentorship schemes following shortly after.

pre:fab School seeks students, program collaborators, funding and promoting partners, and anyone else interested in contributing to the design of a radical new take on education and licensing in the built environment, to join us at 5:00pm on the 16th of April at Objectspace, or connect with us at kiaora@prefab.xzy or @pre-fab_platform on IG.

pre:fab School:
Imagine the future and build what's missing
